The reality of our (h)eros is mostly an encounter.
The 2012 meeting of Sylvain Paris and ssayan is decisive and signs a turning point: they unite their art and names*, becoming the entity innuit & ssayan.
innuit & ssayan are a disturbed mix of personages and pseudonyms, by which the two artists play to muddle up the tracks of their identity: innuit & ssayan embody some facets of the authors’ personalities, having for them a cathartic function.
To simplify this labyrinth: innuit siniswichi, best known under the shorthand innuit, is the conceptual double of the artist Sylvain Paris (see Sylvain Paris and his doubles). Sylvain Paris has another pseudo, used to sign his drawings: koloro koro. ssayan denominates at first ssayan the artist, but ssayan of the innuit & ssayan entity is ssayan manga (shortened to ssayan to name the duo), the conceptual double of ssayan-artist. ssayan manga exists without innuit, all autonomous.
ssayan has other artistic doubles too, Inertia (born in 2013) and Membrane (in concept).
HE loves messing up the leads, playing with the codes of the painting and comics in an open spirit where the modernity and the tradition act in complicity, in a resolutely underground spirit.
SHE searches for the primary gesture, simplified, deconstructed, in a dynamic and festive dance expression form based upon the pulsation and the work on the rhythm.
The same Ariadne thread arches a bridge between their respective worlds, bringing into play – literally and figuratively – body, juxtaposition and combinatory, symbolic dimension, unconventional universe freed of all morality, where the antagonisms coexist and all the paradoxes are dissolved, with a dual objective to defocus the look and to develop its creative potential.
From their performances, Sylvain and ssayan realise graphic and plastic artworks, some already made public through publications and the Eros Zone exhibition.
During this period, ssayan develops her activity as LOV – Livre d’Or Vivant / Living Guestbook, at exhibitions.
In the summer of 2012, they welcomed in artistic residency, at their rrose semoy association, the artist photographer Martial Verdier, and created a common project Le tarot sauvage (The wild tarot).
End of 2013, the two artists choose to suspend their collaboration, feeling they arrived at the end of a cycle, at the completion of a certain path and that they needed a renewal.
The stopped their performances for a while.
Yet, they have planned to finish their current project, a boxed set of two books, which is a textual and graphic adaptation of the innuit & ssayan peregrinations:
– the first, ssayan & the black speech bubbles, is a photonovel created from the homonymous performance saga;
– second, innuit & the 19 roses, is inspired by innuit & ssayan – the sitcom.
The ego games’ best of ssayan and innuit
As two angels, they come alive for this I versus I game…
He: the clear yet fleshy line, in continuous lacing, which grabs to several as a fire hose of a well fed python.
She: the rhythmic movement with a circular pattern, nagging leitmotiv of a stylized gesture, which only emerges from his hole of nothingness to go back again, the trace of its presence persisting long after its disappearance.
The scrambling of the two, archetypal and frail, delicate relationship of heavy mastodons, gives a labyrinth graph, both on the sheet as on the drawing space.
No-Adam and no-Eve, they play endlessly, in a density which deconstructs, which goes to the essential: from the saturation emerges an art of the simplification, shooting right at the goal through its aside ways, crab walking along the diagonals of time, in the twisting, in the distortion and undulation of codes.
From these paltry lines, sketched by our conceptual doubles, emerges a substance:
ssayan et innuit are there, so loudly there, that they become real.
Relying my support on the thread of the instant, powerful and fragile…
* Sylvain Paris signs some of his works from this period with the name Sylvain Essayan Paris.
With Sylvain, we shake up the codes of conjugality, because innuit and ssayan this is it! A joyful mess, which abolishes the dualities, where form and content merge in bipolar relationships, where the same and the opposite bravely overlap…
